US sales tax calculator
Add or extract sales tax using common US state rates for 2026 (locals may add more).
Rates and thresholds for the 2026 tax year. This tool is a helper, not tax advice.
Calculate US sales tax by state rate (no federal Value Added Tax)
Enter a net or gross amount, pick a common US state sales tax rate (or Custom… for a combined local rate), and choose Add tax (net to gross) or Extract (gross to net). The US has no federal Value Added Tax (VAT); rates are state (and often local). Presets include California 7.25%, Texas/Illinois 6.25%, Florida 6%, New York state 4%, and an estimated US combined average (~7.53%).
Example: a $200 online order shipped to a California customer at the 7.25% state preset totals $214.50 before any local district tax. Local city/county add-ons can raise the combined rate. Helper only, not tax advice. To see whether you must collect in a state, use the US sales tax nexus threshold check for nexus (a sufficient connection to the state).
US sales tax calculator: FAQ
Why does this calculator use state rates instead of one US sales tax rate?
There is no national sales tax or federal Value Added Tax (VAT). Each state sets its own rate; many allow local city and county add-ons. Exact rates can vary by ship-to address, so treat presets as starting points and confirm the combined rate for the destination jurisdiction.
Are the US sales tax presets combined state-plus-local rates?
Most presets are state-level rates only. The “US avg (combined est.)” option approximates a population-weighted state+local average and is only an estimate. For checkout pricing, look up the customer’s ZIP or use a rate lookup API rather than relying on the national average.
Which US states have no statewide sales tax?
Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax; Alaska has no state rate but some localities do. Use the 0% preset as a starting point, then check whether a local tax still applies at the ship-to address.
When do I need to collect US sales tax; and how does nexus fit in?
You generally collect only where you have nexus (a sufficient connection to the state via physical presence or economic sales/transaction tests). Confirm the rate for your nexus address and product category with the state Department of Revenue (DOR), and use the nexus threshold check as a first filter before you start charging tax on every order.
