Calculate German Value Added Tax (MwSt) for net or gross amounts

Enter a net or gross amount, pick the German VAT rate (or Custom… for another percentage), and choose Add VAT (net to gross) or Extract (gross to net). Results update immediately. The standard rate is 19%; the reduced rate of 7% applies to many groceries, books, newspapers, local public transport and hotel stays in common cases.

Example: a freelancer quotes €1,000 net for a consulting job; add 19% to show the client a €1,190 gross total. This is a helper for 2026 rates, not tax advice. Reverse-charge and 0% intra-EU business-to-business (B2B) invoices are not modelled here. If you may be exempt under §19 of the German VAT Act (UStG), check the Kleinunternehmer threshold before adding VAT.

German VAT calculator: FAQ

+

When should I add German VAT versus extract it from a gross total?

↓

Add Value Added Tax (VAT) when your price is net (typical business-to-business / B2B quote) and you need the amount the customer pays. Extract when you only have a gross total; for example a till receipt or marketplace payout; and need the net base plus the tax share for bookkeeping or expense claims.

Which German VAT rate should I use for my invoice?

↓

Most goods and services use 19%. Many groceries, books, newspapers and local public transport use 7%. If you are unsure, check the supplier invoice category or ask a Steuerberater. Using the wrong rate on a real invoice is a compliance issue, so treat this calculator as a quick arithmetic helper only.

How do Kleinunternehmer invoices work with this VAT calculator?

↓

Kleinunternehmer generally do not charge Value Added Tax (VAT) and must not show 19% or 7% on invoices. Use the German small-business VAT limit check for the €25,000 prior-year and €100,000 current-year ceilings, then leave VAT at zero on those invoices.

How does this calculator handle reverse charge or mixed VAT rates?

↓

It does not. Figures are rounded to two decimals using one selected rate. Reverse charge, Ist-Versteuerung, and invoices that mix 19% and 7% lines need a proper Value Added Tax (VAT) return setup; confirm those cases with a tax advisor before filing.
