Value Added Tax (VAT) you paid on purchases and can reclaim under the effective method.
Effective method is cheaper

Compare Swiss flat-rate VAT (Saldosteuersatz) vs effective Swiss VAT (MWST)
Enter net turnover, your Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) industry rate (max 6.8%), and annual input VAT (Vorsteuer). The panel shows which Swiss VAT (MWST) method costs less, how much you save per year, and the break-even input VAT. Effective ≈ net × 8.1% − input VAT; flat ≈ (net × 1.081) × Saldosteuersatz (SSS). Mixed rates are estimated using the standard 8.1% only.
Example: CHF 200,000 net, 5.1% SSS and CHF 8,000 Vorsteuer; the panel shows which remittance is cheaper and where Vorsteuer would tip the balance. Planning helper, not tax advice or an ESTV filing. Still unsure about registration? Use the CHF 100,000 threshold check; for line invoices use the Swiss VAT calculator.
Swiss flat-rate vs effective VAT: FAQ
What is the Swiss Saldosteuersatz (SSS)?
Saldosteuersatz (SSS) is Switzerland’s flat-rate remittance method for Value Added Tax (VAT / MWST). Instead of netting output tax against input VAT (Vorsteuer) under the effective method, you apply an industry rate set by the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) to your turnover (typically including VAT). This calculator compares that flat remittance with the effective method; it is not an ESTV filing.
Where do I find my Swiss Saldosteuersatz (SSS) industry rate?
The Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) publishes industry rates by activity. Enter the percentage that applies to your main business; the field is capped at 6.8%. If you run several activities with different Saldosteuersatz (SSS) values, model the dominant rate first, then stress-test with the next-highest rate your ESTV approval might assign.
Why does the flat-rate method convert net turnover to gross?
Saldosteuersatz is applied to turnover including Value Added Tax (VAT). The tool multiplies net by 1.081 as a standard-rate proxy so the flat remittance is comparable to effective Swiss VAT (MWST) calculated on the same economic base. If you mainly sell at 2.6% or 3.8%, treat the result as directional only.
When does the effective Swiss MWST method cost less than Saldosteuersatz?
When input Value Added Tax (VAT) is high relative to sales; for example you buy a lot of taxed equipment, inventory or imported services. The more Vorsteuer you reclaim, the more effective tends to win; low Vorsteuer often favours the flat industry rate instead.
Can I switch freely between Saldosteuersatz and effective MWST?
No. Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) approval and minimum periods apply before you change method. Use this comparison as a planning sketch, then file the proper application; do not remittance-switch mid-year without written approval.
