Check the Swiss VAT (MWST) registration threshold (CHF 100,000)
Enter expected annual gross taxable turnover (worldwide, not profit). The result states plainly whether registration is optional or required. Above CHF 100,000, MWST registration is generally mandatory within 30 days. Below, you may register voluntarily (usually for at least 12 months).
Example: forecast CHF 85,000 gross; registration stays optional; CHF 110,000 means you should register promptly. Helper only, not tax advice. After registration, calculate line tax with the Swiss VAT calculator (8.1% / 2.6% / 3.8%) or compare remittance methods with the flat-rate vs effective tool.
Swiss MWST registration: FAQ
Is the Swiss MWST threshold based on gross or net turnover?
The Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) threshold is gross taxable turnover (consideration including Value Added Tax (VAT) where applicable), not profit and not a net-of-tax figure. Entering net-only sales will understate your position relative to the CHF 100,000 line.
Does worldwide turnover count toward Swiss MWST registration?
Yes. Foreign taxable turnover can count toward the CHF 100,000 test. Place-of-supply rules are nuanced, so this slider is only a first filter: confirm which foreign receipts the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) includes if you sell across borders or from abroad into Switzerland.
Can I register for Swiss MWST voluntarily below CHF 100,000?
Yes. Voluntary registration below the threshold is possible and typically carries a minimum period (often about 12 months). It is useful when you have high input tax on equipment or imports and want to reclaim Vorsteuer sooner.
What should I do if my Swiss turnover is close to CHF 100,000?
Track gross taxable turnover monthly, plan the 30-day registration window, and decide whether effective Swiss VAT (MWST) or Saldosteuersatz fits better once registered. Confirm borderline foreign supplies with a Treuhänder or the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) before you cross the line unexpectedly.
